Ben Zhao has announced the release of CDlinux 0.9.1, a minimalist live CD with Xfce and support for several languages: "CDlinux 0.9.1 was released today. This is a yet another big leap towards CDlinux 1.0, integrating many new features and enhancements, including: a new GUI installation and upgrade wizard; rewrite the 'persistent mode' code and save persistent data as Squashfs; replace Fcitx with SCIM to support input method for more locales; add full support for German, French, Japanese and Russian; add support for 'Safe Graphics Mode' in case native X.Org driver fails; determine better whether to run in RAM or loop mode; some fine-tuning to improve performance on machines with low memory; many package upgrades, including Linux kernel 2.6.28.4, Firefox 3.0.6, Ghostscript 8.64, GIMP 2.6.4, JRE 6u12, Wine 1.1.14." CLUE's involvement in Internet issues: ICANN, Net Neutrality and competitive access

As a demonstration of CLUE's involvement in issues beyond "Linux Users", I want to talk about some of the issues that Evan Leibovitch (past executive director) and I (as policy coordinator) are involved in.

Evan has been acting as chair of the North American Region At-Large Advisory Committee of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). Evan will hopefully be blogging about his involvement soon, and some of the issues that the advisory committee deals with. People may get a taste for the types of issues by listening to the This week in Law episode 13 from last month.

While I spoke at IT360 last week on the issue of Software Patents and Free/Libre and Open Source Software, recent interviews and blogging have been focused on the related issues of "Net Neutrality" and competitive access to telecommunications facilities. While these two issues are often lumped together or even confused for each other, I try to separate them in my articles.

Employee Memberships are similar to regular memberships but are offered as part of Corporate Sponsorships. Is CLUE a charity?
No, CLUE is a Canadian federally-incorporated not-for-profit corporation but it is not registered as a charity. Doing so would be inconsistent with our aims of policy advocacy. As a result, we cannot issue charitable-donation tax receipts; however, CLUE memberships may qualify as an acceptable business expense for tax purposes. Check with your tax advisors to see if this applies to you.

Is CLUE a user group?
Not in the same way as most conventional computer user groups. CLUE does not hold regular meetings, run regular public education events or distribute software. We work with and support affiliated groups, with which we work together to support FOSS at both the local and national levels.
