Matthew Rice) Date: 18 Mar 2004 19:42:24 -0500 Subject: [adopt] getting Linux into NGOs and gov't Message-ID: Hi guys, I have been speaking with a few people [some of you are on this e-mail] about the following idea. The best way to put is probably the way I just described it in an IRC chat: It's a CLUE program that I want to start called 'adopt an NGO'. Each LUG gets paired up with an appropriate sized NGO and commit to a one year trial of some OSS stuff. at the end of the year, NGO decides what to do [keep or drop the stuff] and have the option of contracting future support [LUG team or 3rd party] and the LUG can move on to the next NGO or continue with the current one if there are good reasons. It seems like a win-win. We get some NGOs trying OSS before buying and the 'consultants' in the group get a chance to find some clients once they come off the freebie train. That's the brainfart version of it. Of course, there's going to be some details to hammer out. If you're still reading, there's a mailing list that I just created for you to join: http://www.linux.ca/mailman/listinfo/adopt I believe the Simon and Noah are interested in leading the CLUE side of things and everyone in the CC on this e-mail is from TLUG. I figured you could be our focus group before we approach the rest of the LUGs in Canada. FWIW, I would like to get the BUGs involved at some point, too. And the PUGs, PMs, ... [yeah, too many acronyms :)]. I've included a group called 'community colo' because this may be a good source of finding NGOs that need colo and they may want to get involved. I don't want to get into much discussion here. If the idea is intriguing to you, individually, join the list and start posting [I'd like the archives]. The position's been offered to Noah as a) he may need/want a job for the summer and b) he wants to be one of the lead organizers/definers of the project. Other than that, I'm holding off from spurring people on until after OSW this weekend [http://www.osw.ca]. BTW, OSW's the other major project I want CLUE to get involved in; making OSW a national event in Canada. Multiple cities one the same weekend. Probably during National IT week. It's where I wanted that national installfest that we did a few years ago to evolve so it's a perfect fit. Meanwhile, if anyone wants to start throwing ideas and opinions around about the 'adopt an NGO' project, feel free. I know one or two user groups that are always looking for meeting ideas... this will help them out as well. -- bjb at istop dot com Open Source Weekend http://www.osw.ca 5F82 9855 E247 1F8A 49CD 053E FB03 E77F 2A19 D707 From matt at starnix.com Fri Mar 26 09:56:51 2004 From: matt at starnix.com (G.
